I just bought this book. As a composer I hoped to gain insight into the musical structure of the work - melodic, harmonic, rhythms ideas and larger ideas on form and structure.I was disappointed - brutally disappointed. The book serves none of the above. The worst chapter of all is by Joseph Kerman - Chapter 3 "The prelude and the play". Here is a direct quote from page 54 which will clearly demonstrate my disappointment: ..."Much has been written about the linear and harmonic aspects of bars 1-17 of Tristan ind Isolde, much more than can be summarised here. Let me bite the bullet, and summarize none of it all, for there are more important points to make about the music - "
Is he serious? What is the point of buying a book analysing one of the most important works in classical music, and that author chooses not to analyse any of among most important 17 bars of it! What's the point in buying the book so? Why don'tI go to those other sources instead?
But this is not the end of it. The rest of the chapter is equally lazy - with this author just not bothering to put the time in to do a proper analysis and offer it to the reader. Instead, it's a typical, out-of-date, lazy, ABRCM Grade 7/8 analysis you'd expect from a student. He picks odds and ends at most; and provides nothing substantive.
This book has been a complete waste of money (as a work analysis source for musicians and composers). The editor, Arthur Groos should be chastised for letting such poor editorial standards prevail and for not spotting this seriously sun-standard Chapter 3.
I bought this book having studied one of Cambridge Music handbooks books: Debussy La Mer by Simon Trezise - a stunning book with exhaustive of not unprecedented analysis and insight into La Mer. By comparison, Tristan ind Isolde is, in my opinion, lazy, sloppy and essentially useless as an analysis resource.

Wagner's Tristan und Isolde occupies a singular position in the history of Western culture. What Nietzsche called the 'sweet and terrible infinity' of its basic nexus of longing and death has fascinated audiences since its first performance in 1865.
