After awakening in a strange place with people she had never seen before, except for one- Lucas. He was the one who was there after the accident as she thought she was dying, "My gave was cradled in Lucas's chest; he was embracing me on his arms. My eyesight slowly was taken away from me, leaving me in the dark. I can't breathe." She had feared for her "life and yet, was relieved when it was over." The people who took her in were kind and casting, even though she didn't understand what was going on. One tried to explain, "I know this is a lot for you to adjust to, but you must understand, we don't want to hurt you. We are here to help you, hoping you can do the same in return." Though she couldn't help but think, "Nothing makes sense and I can't imagine where I will find the answers." Fearing the worst and thinking she was kidnapped she tries to make an escape only to find herself head on with more things she didn't understand. Thankfully the ones who took her on were there to protect her. And though she needed answers and they wanted to help her understand the only thing she could think was "Right now I did't want to be told what had happened because I was too scared to hear the answer. My kidnappers had just saved me from some kind of creatures who desperately wanted to kill me." "What is going on? I cried not only from the pain in my nose but from the feelings I had buried deep inside after all that had happened." "Two days ago I would have called him a liar. But after what I saw today-and what I felt when that little girl attacked me, squeezing my throat-I couldn't help but believe him entirely." were Karla's thoughts after finally hearing what was going on. With the new knowledge she had attained all she just wanted "to fall asleep and forget all of this, and wake up to find it all a terrible nightmare." But even sleep couldn't not save her she kept having strange dreams; in one of these stands her uncle came to her starting "Dear Karla, see what happens when you show affection to your prey? You cough your own blood instead of seeing there's."

After not being able to escape and not finding relaxation through sleep she finally decided "This is what I must do, if only to say goodbye to the life I once knew." She would find a way to embrace this new life she was given and do what she had to do to keep living. This was a start to her new journey where she learned many remarkable things about herself and those around her. This is a very good book. It was hard to put down. Lots of action, some magic of a kind, friendships, and maybe some love I think. So grab a copy and enjoy reading.
Strong female character with battles, internal and external. Non-stop action, interesting characters who continue to evolve as the story challenges them. Magic, love, intrigue. It all adds up to a story I didn't want to put down.
I really did not enjoy this book. I think that in an attempt to make everything mysterious a lot of pertinent information was left out. In actuality I could not finish the book as I could not relate to the characters and felt the the story line was too haywire with situations that were very predictable.
I really enjoyed this book immensely! It was full of action which is always a plus and mystery. It did have its own twists and turns that were shocking and stunning. There were no grammatical errors that I saw which is great! The only reason I gave it 4 out of 5 stars was because to me, it was a tad bit confusing at times but again that's my opinion. Great job Kia!! Now on to book 2!!
I really liked this book! It's definitely YA with a touch if the angst that we all know and love in the YA genre as well as a nice chunk of the fantasy end that mixes to be a wonderful creation of a world to explore. Going on the journey with Karla while she learns of her power and how to use it was consistently interesting and never let me down. The story flowed perfectly and the writing was well done. I found no errors or downsides to this books except that it ended! I wish I could've stayed next to Karla, but at least I can visit her whenever I want. Good job Kia Carrington-Russell!
My first book by Kia and I really enjoyed it. I love reading an author's first works. Especially when it draws me in and I want to live in it. New world of magic, love deception, growth if character. Super exciting!
It starts out with with quiet shy teenager, Karla whom gets detention because of her wild best friend. All seems so normal until the popular guy, Paul lets her in on the fact that he likes her and Karla stsrts feeling like she's being followed. One night on an impromptu date out a mysterious guy, Lucas literally bumps into her and her world changes.
Karla wakes up around people she doesn't know with powers she didn't know she had.; told that she died she is scared, confused, and alone. She tries to make heads or tails of her situation and doesn't know if she can trust these people.
Karla finds out she is a shielder and that someone inside her is trying to possess not only her soul but her body. She is drawn to Lucas and begins to rely heavily on him for support, guidance, and comfort. When she finally gets to go back to see her family they have not been seen since her disappearance. She goes looking for Paul, the last person she was with hoping for answers. He does not have any and an attack happens where they have to flee with Paul.
The next attack leaves everyone in shambles not knowing who to trust. Lucas' dad is being possessed by the brother of Karla's possessor and they are destined to fight. This fight leaves Karla's body broken and too much deception to be forgiven. Everyone goes their own way with Karla and Paul heading out in their own to look for her parents.
