The confession of Brother Haluin the fifteenth chronicle of Brother Cadfael of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul at Shrewsbury Ellis Peters 9780445408555 Books

Ellis Peters is the pseudonym of an outstanding medieval scholar, and her books are true to the spirit of the Middle Ages,..i.e. nobody promotes abortion and most priests are normal human beings, flawed, of course, but pursuing the good. It's refreshing to me because, as an amateur medievalist, I refuse to read books that use medieval props to promote modern social ideas. Peters creates realistic characters with real virtues and pleasantly interesting flaws plus plots that twist like a triskelion. Cadfael is her stellar creation and as you read the series, he becomes more and more likeable, because rather than in spite of his occasional deviation from the Rule of St. Benedict. Her background details are true to the period and don't strike the false note that many modern books do.

The confession of Brother Haluin the fifteenth chronicle of Brother Cadfael of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul at Shrewsbury Ellis Peters 9780445408555 Books Reviews

The world that Cadfael lives in makes the 12th century England feel like a cozy, kind place to live. I love his characters. This story is less a murder mystery than a story of lies and misdirection While there was an evil character, it was one I could understand and who admitted her crime.

Lovely ending. I highly recommend this book.
As always Ellis Peters satisfies. Only because I know her Cadfael tales so well did I know the ending before it came. But still worth reading. She knows the period so well, all details exact and correct. I find such jealousy unbelievable, but then I feel that equally in author’s speaking of today. I simply don’t understand jealousy. I trust this will tell no one the secrets of this tale.
After returning from a Christmas celebration with King Stephen, Sherriff Hugh Beringar updates Brother Cadfael of Empress Maud's escape from Oxford. Brother Cadfael shares his own news. Brother Haluin had a terrible fall off the roof. Haluin confesses to Abbot Radulfus and Cadfael he helped facilitate an abortion before arriving at the Abbey of St. Peter and St. Paul. He wants to pray for forgiveness at the woman's tomb, even though he can barely walk, thanks to his fall. The abbot allows him to go, along with Cadfael, after he his respite.

The two brothers make the journey all the way to Elford in Staffordshire. After completing his self-imposed penance, the brothers start their return journey. It's on the way back when the story / murder kicks in.

Really enjoyed this tale from Ellis Peters. It shows just how far some people are willing to go to remain in power / control of their family's reputation and title.
This 12th century mystery series by Ellis Peters take place in a fog of civil war, where the English and Welsh were raiding each other’s borders and supporting one or another claimant to the English throne Empress Maud or King Stephen. In spite of the ongoing violence, the author suffuses her novels with a deep sense of peace and contentment in the monastic life. A monk from the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul at Shrewsbury, Brother Cadfael, the ex-Crusader-turned herbalist is her solver of murders and mysteries of the heart. Ellis weaves a rich tapestry of his daily life on the war-torn Welsh border.

This fifteenth novel in a series of 21 mysteries, "The Confession of Brother Haluin," takes place in the winter of 1142 - 1143 after Brother Haluin is severely injured while cleaning snow off of the guest hall roof. He was not a monk who had many friends; he always seemed to be doing penance for misdeeds committed before joining the Order. As Brother Cadfael put it, "... if there’s a hair shirt anywhere within reach Haluin will claim it and wear it."

On what was believed to be his death-bed, Haluin confesses his sins to Father Abbot and they are rather grim many years ago, he had fallen in love with a nobleman's daughter named Bertrade and got her with child. When the girl's mother demanded herbs to bring on a miscarriage, he supplied them. Both mother-to-be and child died and Haluin opted for the religious life.

Haluin doesn't die from his fall off of the roof, although he is badly crippled and by March, he is given permission to make a penitential pilgrimage to his ex-lover's tomb. Brother Cadfael accompanies him.

In case you're wondering how the author is going to contrive a happy ending out of Brother Haluin's pilgrimage, remember that she has not disappointed us yet and we're fifteen books into this series. Brother Cadfael must work very hard to untangle an ancient web of deceit that eventually ends in murder--oh, and by the way, help yet another pair of star-crossed lovers. This is not my favorite book in the series, because I could never develop much sympathy for Brother Haluin, but it is always a pleasure to watch my favorite herbalist hard at work on another mystery of the heart.
