I absolutely loved this book. Kathy is smart, funny and a natural writer. She's got the comedic rhythm going when she writes, so I was smiling through most of the book and laughing out loud sometimes, which is incredibly rare for me. I laughed more reading this than the only two other books that ever got a laugh out of me: Bossypants and Joan Rivers' first memoir, which I can't remember the name of. I read it in the 90's.I'm from Chicago and know Oak Park and was around the improv world in the mid-80''s to early 90's, so it was fun reading about a world I know/knew. It was tough for women to come up in comedy (and still is. Men said women weren't funny when I was in that world. Male comedians have rarely made me laugh. News flash: we have different sensibilities. But there is overlap. I love you Martin Short!!!) I loved Kathy's perseverance.
I watched some of her D-List reality show back in the day and adored her parents. Loved hearing more about them. It was fascinating to hear what happened to her husband. Most of us understand not paying attention to clues at first about the people we fall in love with.
This was a great memoir. I'm halfway through her second book and loving it (and not understanding the reviews saying they love Kathy and loved her first book, but the second one is awful. I love the second one. Hope to review that also.)
Highly recommended.

Official Book Club Selection A Memoir According to Kathy Griffin Kathy Griffin 9780345518514 Books Reviews
Kathy's memoir does provide some excellent laughs, but it's not all fun and games. Kathy gets into some serious topics, so don't think this is like watching one of her shows. Her memoir is so much more than listening to her trash celebrities, perform D-List appearances, or mimic the fabulous Maggie Griffin. We get to learn about the "real" Kathy Griffin, and get some insight into her life growing up, events that shaped her (figuratively and literally -- hello, plastic surgery!), and her loves and losses. I loved learning about Kathy's observations as a child, her family, her obsession with food (particularly Jiffy cake), Kathy's start in show business, Kathy's marriage, and everything in between. It's well-written (shout-out to her ghost writer!) and gives some true insight into the comedienne, making you appreciate her all the more. She's a real person with ups and downs, and sometimes I wanted to reach out and give her a big hug. Kathy never fails to impress, and I'm so glad she's finally getting some real recognition for all of her hard work and accomplishments. She definitely earned her time in the spotlight.
If I had any disappointment with the book, it would be that Kathy didn't reveal enough about her marriage, her relationships with the members of Team Griffin (Jessica, Tiffany, and Tom), and what the heck happened between she and Jessica that she's no longer her assistant. Also, the chapter of email exchanges between Kathy and Woz was a big yawner. What exactly was their relationship? What happened that he was suddenly marrying someone else? Inquiring minds want to know. Perhaps those details are being saved for Official Book Club Selection, Volume Two.
At any rate, I loved learning more about Kathy, the person. I hope she'll tell us more in future memoirs as well as books of observations of celebrities. She's got a lot of material, and I'll take it in any way, shape, or form I can get it. Thanks for being you, Kathy Griffith. Er...Kathie Lee. Er...Kathy Griffin. )
After reading the book, check out the audio book! It's worth a second "reading!"
I bought both the hard copy and the audiobook of this great memoir - and it was worth the money! Anyone who is a fan of Kathy Griffin knows that she is an amazing story teller - making even the most minor celebrity encounter into an elaborate tale, usually enhanced by her special brand of brutal comedy. This book is great because instead of focusing on other celebrities, this time the stories are all about her - yay! I loved hearing about how she hustled for about 37 years before getting her big break - it's so very real and honest. The brutal reality is that in Hollywood, people have to pay dues for YEARS, sometimes DECADES before they get discovered. Listening to Kathy break down her process is truly inspiring. She's funny, she's brash, and with the audiobook, you really feel like it's just you and her having one of the best conversations EVER! She tackles some serious subjects (her estranged brother, her issues with overeating and her marriage-gone-wrong) along with hilarious stories about her career (my favorite is her performance-gone-wrong with Andy Dick) and her parents. Bottom line GET THIS BOOK. It'll make you happy.
